Manko is the oasis of Waterbirds and aquatic life

Lake Manko, lacated at the confluence of the Kokuba and the Noha River which run through Naha City and Tomigusuku City,is surrounded by roads, parkd and houses except for partially remaining natural shore.

The area of the Ramsar Convention Register of Wetlands starts from the upstream between the briges of madanbashi and Ishihiyabashi and ends at the downstream located at the Naha Ohashi Bridge. The designated area is 58 hactares with a mud flat bottom.

Lake Manko is a staging site for migratory birds such as snipes and plovers. Some migrate from Russia to Australia, covering the distance of 12,000 km.Not only herons like Great Egret and Grey Heron, but also such rare birds as Common Redshank and Black-faced spoonbill fly over to Lake Manko.

Lake Manko not only hosts mangroves lacated near the northern limit of its distribution, but also a reed field,a coastal wetland forest, and Okinawa’s largest tidal mud flat.
There are abundant creatures for birds to feed on and a variety of benthos exist in the lake. Those are the kinds only to be seen in a mud flat and a particular species of shellfish in danger of extinction has also been found.
